There is a pervasive data gap that hampers monitoring Maui’s socioeconomic recovery after the devastating wildfires in August 2023. Most regularly collected administrative records (e.g. unemployment claims) and federal survey data are aggregated to the county level and are often
only released with a substantial time lag, limiting their usefulness for timely decision-making.

The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii offers suggestions to federal, state and Maui County officials regarding how to facilitate the rebuilding of homes and other structures in Lahaina that were destroyed or damaged by the wildfires of August 2023.
